Start your journey in discovering Falciano del Massico, located in the province of Caserta. Explore the small town and its surroundings: visit Lake Falerno and then make your way up Mount Massico. Along the mountain trails, you can venture into the lush, dense woods, home to foxes, hedgehogs, nightingales, and other animals part of the region’s ecosystem. Finally, from the top of the Massico, enjoy the breathtaking views of the Campanian landscape, stretching all the way from Mount Vesuvius to the sea, which is just 10 km away.

LAKE FALERNO
SPECIAL RESERVE
We invite our visiting “Ager Falernus” explorers to discover the stunning lakeside setting. Located just over a kilometer from the town, you can discover the Lago Falerno Special Reserve—formerly known as Lake Carinola. An uncontaminated body of water with tectonic origin, formed along the volcanic axis stretching from Roccamonfina to Vesuvius. An area of significant environmental importance—now a protected area and natural reserve—Lago Falerno features clear waters and a volcanic lake bed, providing an ideal habitat for various fish species. It’s a captivating destination for anyone visiting our region.
FLORA
The native woodlands on Mount Massico are characterized by dense vegetation that includes tall holm oaks, hornbeams, carob trees, wild olives, downy oaks, and field maples. On the southern slope, there is also dense Mediterranean scrub, which features tangled thickets of myrtle, privet, lentisk, strawberry trees, and butcher’s-broom. Additionally, you can find tall cypresses, stone pines, maritime pines, and some specimens of black locust and acacia in this area.
Fauna
The woods on the slopes of Mount Massico are home to a variety of mammals, including foxes, weasels, beech martens, wild boars, pine martens, badgers, hedgehogs, moles, and edible dormice. Additionally, ninety different bird species can be found here, such as blue rock thrushes, great tits, barn owls, and small predators like the scops owl, which migrates to Campania after spending the winter in Africa. Moreover, the calm waters of Lake Falerno, now a wildlife reserve and protected area, also host various fish species.
